Pêra

History

Village located about 12 km from the county seat, Silves. Its population today will be around 2,000 inhabitants and originally was called "Pera de cima" to distinguish from Armacao de Pera which was then termed, "Pera de baixo". Here dwelt fishermen who performed their fishing traps in the near coast.

Over the centuries the story of Pera comes close and inevitably linked to Armacao de Pera. In the seventeenth century, flourished in Pera family of Galician, which he left the governor of Armacao de Pera fortress, which was built by their ancestors against pirate assaults.

The village, has two churches, the Parish and the St. Francis. At first the focus is on the narrative tiles, the baroque altarpieces of the high altar, the side chapels and the sacristy, representative of the national gold leaf, or to the stalls of the choir; in the St. Francis once again the gilt century. XVIII, the elevations painted in the chancel, the screens of the Algarve known painter, Rasquinho. The latter offers a magnificent balcony from where you can enjoy beautiful views and where the sea and the fields are lost sight of.

The urban layout characterized by very narrow streets and alleys, proves to be very old, some buildings of the nineteenth century or early twentieth century, show some concern with aesthetic character issues, which gives this small town a singular beauty. Right near the beaches and dunes of the vast Praia Grande and the faunal richness of Salgados Lagoon and the mouth of the Ribeira de Alcantarilha, once site of prehistoric settlement.
